The Reality We Create

We think we KNOW the Truth with a capital “T” – or even “t”, but think again.

This network TV show clip is actually a real audio of a football (European) crowd chant. It is used to explain the theories behind Dr. Jessamyn Schertz who explained that these kinds of illusions emphasize how reading or imaging a phrase can actually shape what we perceive.

Extrapolated further, we see what we expect to see.

This is a survival mechanism. Our brains are wired to anticipate what’s coming next so we can protect ourselves. In the wild, that kept us alive.

But in the workplace or at home, it can backfire.

>You expect our boss is upset with you, so you “hear” a harsh tone negative tone in what was meant as a constructive comment.

>You hold a narrative that our mother-in-law doesn’t like us so even a neutral remark feels loaded with criticism.

>A coworker misses your email, and instead of assuming oversight, you “see” disrespect.

Our expectations become filters. They don’t just color reality – they create it.

The opportunity? Once we become aware of these filters, we can pause and question and choose a new lens. Instead of assuming criticism, we can look for collaboration. Instead of expecting conflict, we can search for goodwill.

If you didn’t come to the situation with predisposed stories, how do you think others might experience you?
